The Local Council Roads Innovation Group (LCRIG) has announced a new initiative to help people find routes into highways and transport careers, calling on employers to contribute information about jobs, entry requirements and opportunities for progression.

Announced at LCRIG’s Strictly Highways conference in Blackpool, the Highways Career Pathways Hub Employer Pledge invites organisations to support the development of a careers resource showcasing the range of opportunities across the sector.

Employers are being asked to explain their typical roles, the skills and qualifications needed, and routes into employment through apprenticeships, graduate schemes, degrees, vocational qualifications and other entry pathways.

The pledge also seeks examples of progression from entry-level positions into senior or specialist roles, alongside current and upcoming vacancies, apprenticeship opportunities, work experience, internships and placements.

Organisations can contribute details of training, mentoring and professional development, as well as case studies giving prospective recruits an insight into working in highways and transport. Information provided could be shared through LCRIG’s website to help people understand their options and build a career in the industry.

The initiative builds on LCRIG’s wider work to address skills shortages. The organisation says local authority highways teams face growing pressure to deliver services, increasing demand for professionals with the skills to support them.

Its existing activities include an Apprenticeship Task Group, run by apprentices for apprentices, providing a network to share experiences, support career development and help promote the sector to the next generation. LCRIG has also established Highway Maintenance Academy apprenticeship programmes with Salford City College and Salford City Council, including an outdoor facility supporting practical learning, and with Askham Bryan College in York.

Employers wishing to contribute to the new resource can complete the Highways Career Pathways Hub Employer Pledge on LCRIG’s website.
