The London Borough of Newham has published its 2026/27 Highway Maintenance Transparency Report that details investment in roads, footways, drainage, lighting and repairs, showing how works are prioritised and funded across the borough.
The report gives residents a clear view of how the borough looks after and invests in its roads, footways and other vital highway assets.
Newham’s highway network is one of the largest and busiest in London. It includes:
- 431km of roads
- 706km of footways
- 72 highway structures, including bridges and subways
- Plus thousands of gullies, signs, streetlights and other essential assets that keep the borough moving.
This year’s report sets out the condition of our network, how repairs are prioritised, and the full programme of planned maintenance works for 2026/27.
Among the council’s planned works for 2026/27 are:
- 8.9km of road resurfacing to improve safety and ride quality
- 2.7km of preventative micro-asphalting to extend the life of roads before they deteriorate
- 5.3km of footway renewal to improve accessibility and reduce trip hazards
- Drainage improvements to reduce surface water and localised flooding
- Maintenance of key structures across the borough
- Upgrades to street lighting to improve visibility and energy efficiency
