Overnight lane closures are set to begin this week as part of early works on the Lower Thames Crossing. The closures will affect sections of the M25 in Thurrock as National Highways carries out ground investigations and utility surveys, reports the Southend Echo. The new crossing project will connect the A2 and M2 in Kent to the A13 and M25 in Essex via a 2.6-mile tunnel beneath the Thames.
The work is designed to support safe construction and minimise disruption in the surrounding area.
On the M25, lanes one and two on the anticlockwise carriageway will be closed between North Ockendon and Great Warley from 10pm to 5.30am, Monday, September 14 to Thursday, September 17.
Additional closures will take place on the M25 between Nag’s Head Lane and Cobham Hall Wood from 10pm to 5.30am from Wednesday 16 to Thursday 17 September. Barriers will be installed around the trenches, and a traffic operative will be on-site to manage vehicle flow.
Lanes one and two will also be closed near North Ockendon from 15 September for ground investigation work from 10pm until 5.30am the following day.
These closures will also see barriers put in place around trenches.
Early enabling works for the Lower Thames Crossing began in March 2026 after the project was approved in March 2025. Construction and tunnelling are due to start in 2028, with the 14.5-mile route is expected to open in the mid-2030s.
