Work on a long-term solution to the landslip-plagued Rest and Be Thankful remains a top priority, according to Scotland’s Transport Secretary.

Visiting the A83 for the first time last week since taking up office in May, Stephen Flynn reaffirmed to the Helensburgh Advertiser his commitment to improving the key route through Argyll and Bute. Facing questions in parliament last year, First Minister John Swinney made a similar pledge, but residents and businesses remain keen for more progress.

Mr Flynn said:

“The Scottish Government remains committed to delivering a permanent solution to address the landslip risks at the A83 Rest and Be Thankful and it is a priority for us all. We recognise the impacts that landslides have had on the local community and businesses and I am committed to developing a response as quickly as possible.”

The A83 Rest and Be Thankful has faced repeated closures due to landslides, disrupting travel and impacting businesses and residents in Argyll and Bute.

Mr Flynn added:

“The situation is being treated with the seriousness and urgency it deserves, with measures to maintain connectivity on a short, medium and long-term basis being implemented.

“Although I’ve travelled the A83 on many occasions, I wanted to visit the site early in my time in office so that I could fully assess the proposed plan for the Old Military Road, and to see first-hand the condition of the forestry track on the other side of the valley.”

The long-term solution includes building a 1.4km debris shelter, designed to protect the road from landslides.
