Highways officers from Staffordshire County Council are investigating a hole that has appeared on the A519 at the Junction of Brook Lane and Stubbs Gate in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Following an initial inspection, engineers uncovered a large hole beneath the road surface, exposing several connecting pipes beneath the carriageway of Brook Lane. Engineers are working with relevant parties, including Severn Trent Water, to try and identify the cause of the problem and any repairs required.

Temporary traffic management measures along with a diversion are being put in place to keep the area safe while further assessments are carried out.

Patrick Allen (pictured), Cabinet Support Member for Highways North at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“Our highways engineers are currently investigating a large hole that has appeared under the A519 in Newcastle town centre.

“What was initially believed to be a localised defect has, following further investigation, been found to be a more extensive hole under the road surface.

“Additional investigation work is required  and crews are working closely with relevant agencies including Severn Trent Water to establish the cause of the problem.  To make sure the investigation work can be carried out safely, temporary traffic lights and a lane closure have been put in place. “Crews will be doing everything they can to rectify the matter and we thank people for their patience and understanding while these essential investigations continue.”
