New traffic cameras will be implemented to enforce a temporary ban on traffic around several Wiltshire schools. Wiltshire Council will launch a School Streets pilot at four schools across the county from September, in a bid to improve safety for children and their families, says the Gazette & Herald.
This pilot will take place at Aloeric Primary School in Melksham, Fynamore Primary School in Calne, Minster Primary School in Warminster and Queen’s Crescent Primary School in Chippenham, all of which have volunteered to take part.
Traffic will be restricted on roads around these schools at the start and end of the school day during term time, with specific times varying at each school.
The new rules will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.
Exemptions will be available for emergency services, people living within the restricted areas, businesses in the restricted areas, and people with defined needs.
The pilot schemes will be operational from September 4 onwards under Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders.
This process will last for 18 months, during which time residents, parents, schools, businesses and the wider community will be able to give feedback on the scheme.
