Wiltshire and Gloucestershire councils have launched separate tenders for road surfacing contracts worth a combined £392m, with work potentially running into the next decade.

Wiltshire’s £200 million machine surfacing contract will start in June 2027 and run for six years, with two possible two-year extensions taking it to May 2037.

The contract covers machine surfacing and associated civil engineering, road markings, road studs, loop cutting and traffic management on highways and other council land.

Gloucestershire, meanwhile, is seeking a contractor for a £192 million structural surfacing programme from April 2027. The initial four-year contract could be extended to eight years, ending in March 2035, with forecast spending of around £24m a year.

Work will include resurfacing, structural repairs, patching, minor reactive schemes, kerbing, ironwork adjustments, road markings and traffic management.

The procurement follows an extension to incumbent Tarmac’s contract after an earlier replacement tender was halted in autumn 2025 because of a technical issue with the tender documents.

Bids for both contracts close at noon on 19 November. Gloucestershire expects to decide on an award in January, followed by Wiltshire in February.
