More major road surface improvements have taken place in Nottinghamshire than anywhere else in the country, according to the County Council. The work is part of a record-breaking funding package to improve the county’s highways, says West Bridgford Wire.
Nottinghamshire County Council is delivering an £182.5 million wide-ranging highways capital programme to fix the network – with repairs and improvements continuing ahead of winter. The investment has enabled the county council to repair tens of thousands of potholes through dedicated repairs and patching; with thousands more defects being addressed as part of wider road resurfacing schemes.
The scale of the highways programme has also increased significantly this year, with over 450 carriageway surfacing schemes planned for 2026/27 – more than double the 207 schemes delivered or planned in 2025/26.
Over 150 schemes have already been completed and form part of a wider programme covering carriageways, footways, drainage, bridges, street lighting, traffic signals, safety fencing and Rights of Way. Much of the remaining programme is expected to be delivered before the winter period.
This year’s programme includes 637,777 square metres of resurfacing – equivalent to more than 56 miles of road – compared with 249,090 square metres, or almost 20 miles, in 2025/26.
A further 1.5 million square metres of road will receive surface dressing, while the combined programme of surface dressing and micro asphalt has increased from 110 schemes last year to more than 220 this year.
The county council is using a combination of teams from highways partner, Via East Midlands, and external contractors to deliver the work, including resurfacing, hotspot reactive resurfacing, surface dressing, micro asphalt, surface preservation, permanent patch repairs, mastic and hot box treatments, as well as Pothole Pro and first-time permanent pothole repairs.
