New Burton town centre cycleway completed

A major project to extend the cycleway through Burton town centre has now been completed, creating safer and more convenient routes for people walking, wheeling and cycling around the town.

The £1.2 million scheme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, has created a new two-way cycle track along Borough Road that links the railway station directly with the Town Hall.

As part of the improvements, crews also resurfaced footways and sections of the road, upgraded bus stops and traffic signals, and painted on new road markings along the route.

The project was delivered over five months and forms part of a wider programme to improve active travel routes across Burton.

The cycleway was funded through £990,000 from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal allocation.

An additional £200,000 from Staffordshire County Council funded wider highways repairs along the route at the same time, reflecting the county council’s new Roadmap to a Better Network approach of tackling multiple issues in one go to reduce repeat roadworks and deliver better value for taxpayers.

Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“I’m really pleased to see the new town centre cycleway extension completed. This new route will make it much safer and easier for people to travel through the town centre, whether they are walking or cycling.  As well as creating better active travel links, the project has also improved roads, footways, crossings and bus stop infrastructure along the route, benefiting everyone who travels through the area.”

“This is a long-term investment in Burton’s future and will help create a healthier, better-connected and more accessible town for residents, businesses and visitors alike.”

The completed cycleway now links key parts of Burton town centre with residential areas through the National Cycle Network (NCN).
