National Highways has confirmed that repairs to the fire-damaged A31 are expected to take at least 24 hours once firefighters declare the road safe to access.
The major route remains closed between the M27 at Junction 2/Ower and the A338 at Ringwood following the New Forest wildfire, reports the Daily Echo. National Highways said significant repairs are needed to the road surface, safety barriers, bridge parapets and boundary fencing.
However, work cannot begin until Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirms crews can safely enter the area. This is not expected to happen until Friday at the earliest.
Smoke, heat, ash and the continuing movement of the fire are currently preventing safe access.
The organisation has said repair crews are already on standby and will work “round the clock” once they are allowed onto the road.
When the road eventually reopens, motorists should expect narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit in both directions.
Permanent repairs to the parapets will be carried out at a later date.
National Highways has urged drivers to continue using the official diversion rather than relying on sat-navs, which could direct motorists onto unsuitable forest roads.
