Police confirm they do not have to be visible when monitoring speeds

Police in Liverpool have taken to Twitter to explain that they don’t have to be visible when operating mobile speed cameras.

The Liverpool Echo reports that a Twitter user posted footage with an officer standing against a bus stop monitoring the speed of oncoming traffic. The post included a comment claiming the officer was “blending in” and drivers couldn’t see him from a distance, and asked “@MerseyPolice are these tactics legal??”

A response read, “Yes they are. Speed cameras like this play a vital part in helping to keep our roads safe and reduce the number of accidents on them each year. They are just one of the tactics we use to achieve this.”
