Residents voice anger at Chester lane closures

A group of people living in Chester have set up a Facebook group complaining at the local Counci’s decision to close lanes to traffic to make room for walking and cycling.

People Against Travel Lanes Chester already has more than 2,300 members who are unhappy at the way Cheshire West and Chester Council has introduced bus lanes in the city, which they say is not what the Government’s £161,000 grant made in the summer is for.

They say the city is regularly jammed and told Highways News they are “banging their head against the wall” trying to talk to the council.

Local newspaper the Chester Standard reports a task force involving resident groups, representatives from motorist organisations, the business community, haulage companies, cycle groups and parish councils has been set up and will meet early next month.

Last week Transport Secretary Grant Shapps was reported to have told councils he is “not prepared to tolerate” badly designed road closures and new cycle lanes which are imposing “sweeping changes” to entire communities.
