Concrete barriers have been installed at a toll bridge hit by a lorry amid fears inconsiderate drivers ignoring the closure could damage it further.

Sandwich Toll Bridge in Kent was struck by a Southern Water tanker on 8 August 8 and has been shut to traffic since amid structural concerns following “significant damage”, says Kent Online.

However, a local councillor says drivers have been ignoring the plastic barriers and signs put up to shut the road. As a result, Kent County Council has craned in concrete blocks to stop traffic.

Cllr Daniel Friend said:

“Kent County Council have had to install these concrete barriers to stop drivers who are moving the barriers and continuing to drive over the bridge. The vibrations caused by passing vehicles risk causing further damage to the bridge hit by a Southern Water contractor.”
