Through its joint venture, Nationwide Traffic Management & Enforcement Ltd (NTMEL), Sensys Gatso Group is supporting the launch and now the ongoing operation of Ghana’s Traffitech-GH National Road Safety program. After an extended public awareness and education campaign, the program officially began issuing citations on 1 November.

“We are committed to saving lives by changing driver behavior. Partnering in Ghana’s new National Road Safety program is an important opportunity to deliver on that commitment,” said Lew Miller (pictured), CEO of Sensys Gatso Group AB. “This initiative also represents the continued expansion of our global impact, bringing 70 years of road safety experience and trusted, proven technology to improve road safety in Ghana.”

Sensys Gatso is a 40% shareholder in NTMEL, which was formed to assist the Government of Ghana with establishing a national road safety program. According to government data, 2,949 people died in road traffic crashes across the country in 2025, up from 2,494 in 2024, an increase of 18.2%.

Over the last several years, NTMEL has worked in close cooperation with the Ghana Police Service and other government stakeholders, to create and implement this new program, which will utilize hardware and software provided by Sensys Gatso to provide lifesaving automated traffic enforcement. The initiative began following an extensive awareness and education period designed to ensure public acceptance and program integrity.

“With the revision of Ghana’s Road Traffic Act and the passing of the 2026 Road Traffic Regulations, we now have a solid regulatory foundation for the program to commence,” said Edmar van der Weijden, Managing Director of NTMEL. “With the support of our public sector partners, we have worked tenaciously for several years towards this moment.”

Beyond the human tragedy, road crashes create a substantial economic burden. A World Bank report from August 2026 estimated the cost of road crash fatalities and serious injuries in Ghana was $4.55 billion annually, equivalent to approximately 2.1% of GDP. As the technology provider to NTMEL with proven methodologies and unique experience in Vision Zero strategies, Sensys Gatso will play an important role in improving safety on Ghana’s road network.
