SVS boasts radar detection system delivers at least 85% saving

The traffic management technology provider Smart Video and Sensing has published a case study which it says shows a radar traffic detection system installed in Coventry cost a fraction of the price of loops.

The company was behind the installation of smartmicro radar to monitor a junction at the entrance to Cyan Business Park, off the main A444 between the M6 and Coventry City Centre.

Smart Video and Sensing estimates the comparative costs of ducting and traffic management for the installation of conventional loop detection would have been in the region of £35-40,000, and would have taken a one or two weeks to install causing disruption to this very busy highway network. It says the smartmicro equipment purchase and installation cost was in the region of £5,000.

The smartmicro technology used was the able to cover multiple lanes on an approach from a single radar unit. The future addition of the data collection capability when paired with the SVS Novus data aggregator, which SVS says provided a potential added bonus as an ‘after market’ addition. “This was seen as a technically advanced solution and also more cost-effective, consequently, the UMRR11 model was chosen,” explained SVS owner Peter Eccleson.
