Thames Valley Police (TVP) is launching a new Safety Camera Motorcyclist team as part of its ongoing commitment to improving road safety and reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads.

This work supports the force’s focus on tackling the ‘Fatal Five’ offences: speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone, and careless or dangerous driving, which are the leading causes of serious collisions.

This initiative forms part of a more agile and responsive approach to enforcement, ensuring TVP can better target areas where speeding and dangerous driving are a concern, particularly in locations where traditional safety camera vans may not be suitable, such as near to schools.

Using specially equipped police motorcycles, trained camera operators will be able to access a wider range of locations across the force area, including outside schools, in rural communities, and in areas with limited space or access. This enhanced mobility allows for a visible enforcement presence in places that have previously been challenging to reach safely with larger vehicles.

The motorcycles will be equipped with handheld laser and video speed detection technology, enabling accurate and effective enforcement. This flexible approach allows us to respond more quickly to identified risk areas, including those highlighted through collision data, community concerns, and local policing priorities.

Local policing teams will also be able to raise concerns about speeding and road safety issues in their communities. Where a genuine concern is identified, deployments can be made to provide targeted enforcement and reassurance to residents that their concerns are being addressed.

Offences detected will be processed in line with existing procedures, with Notices of Intended Prosecution (NIPs) issued where appropriate. This approach supports wider efforts to encourage behavioural change among road users, alongside ongoing education and engagement work.

Funded by the TVP Road Safety Fund, with joint oversight from TVP and the Police and Crime Commissioner, this new Safety Camera Motorcyclist capability will enhance our ability to protect communities, support local policing priorities, and drive long-term reductions in road casualties across the region.

Superintendent Euan Livingstone, Head of our Roads Policing Unit said:|

“We are listening to communities across the Thames Valley, and the clear and consistent concern we hear is about speeding. This capability enables us to focus on what matters most to the public, showing that we are not only listening, but taking meaningful action. It’s about making our roads safer for everyone who uses them every day, whether travelling to work or taking children to school, and ensuring we can take action against those who choose to put others at risk.”
