Cumberland Council is preparing to move into the final phase of the Workington Gateway project, as work continues to deliver major improvements to the town’s infrastructure, connectivity and public spaces.
Good progress has been made across the scheme, which forms part of a wider programme of investment to improve road safety, upgrade essential infrastructure and strengthen links to key employment sites and the Port of Workington. While some short-term traffic management and road closures are still required, these essential works will deliver smoother road surfaces, improved road markings and enhanced connectivity across key routes in and around the town.
The Workington Gateway project is part of a wider programme of investment in the town. In total, Cumberland Council has secured more than £33 million of Government funding for Workington, including £10 million specifically for the Gateway scheme.
To enable the next stage of the scheme to be completed safely and efficiently, a series of road closures and traffic management arrangements will be in place during August and September.
The programme has also been coordinated with National Highways who will be delivering works on the A66 Stainburn Road over several weekends outlined below to ensure all improvements are delivered as efficiently as possible.
Once the initial A66 Ramsay Brow project is concluded and temporary traffic management has been removed, the council will commence the A66 Active Travel project on Stainburn Road. This project will provide a shared use path linking the town centre to Workington Academy. Delivery of the scheme is planned to begin after the August bank holiday weekend with works on Stainburn Road expected to be complete by Christmas. The associated improvements within Hall Park are planned to be completed in the New Year.
Alongside the Active Travel project, National Highways will be carrying out resurfacing works on A66 Stainburn Road and Stainburn roundabout. The programme will be delivered through a series of weekend road closures throughout August and September and coordinated with the Active Travel project to ensure both schemes can be completed safely and efficiently.
