It’s being reported that the chief executive of National Highways, Nick Harris, resigned “after his relationship with the agency’s board broke down” over his handling of the issues around speed cameras on the motorway network leading to some incorrect fines being issued.
Mr Harris announced on Thursday he was stepping down saying “this is the right moment for me to hand over to new leadership who will guide the organisation into its next chapter”.
However, The Sunday Times reports that sources have claimed Mr Harris was “effectively forced to quit after losing the confidence of board members”.
It says frustrations are said to be centred on his handling of a speed-camera flaw, exposed late last year, which resulted in some drivers being incorrectly recorded as speeding.
The Sunday Times says an investigation, headed by a non-executive director of the Department for Transport, will make recommendations on governance and accountability, “suggesting that Harris and other executives were likely to face censure”.
