Roadworks on a key route between Leicester and the M1 are set to last up to six weeks. Resurfacing is being carried out by Leicestershire County Council on the A50 between Markfield and Groby with a programme of overnight closures taking place, according to the BBC.
The first phase will see overnight closures through the week westbound until 19 June, with eastbound then the focus until 10 July, with a contingency period potentially extending the works until 17 July.
The council said the work will cause “short-term disruption” and thanked drivers and residents for their “patience and understanding”.
Work will include the removal of the existing road surface, structural repairs, work to drainage and ironwork and renewal of road markings and studs, said the council.
During the work to Bradgate Hill and Markfield Road, closures will be in force from 20:00 to 06:00 BST on weekday nights “with the road reopening each morning to minimise disruption”.
Diversions will be signed along the A46 and M1 for through traffic.
A council spokesperson said:
“The programme includes carefully managed phases across both directions of the carriageway, using overnight closures to reduce daytime disruption.
“Each phase requires preparation, resurfacing, cooling time and reinstatement to ensure a high-quality, long-lasting finish.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while these essential improvements are delivered.”
