Residents living close to the A11/A47 Thickthorn junction improvement scheme in Norfolk have reported vibrations shaking their homes during construction, with some raising concerns about cracks appearing in walls.

Householders say the effects have been particularly noticeable during certain phases of the £200 million project, which is designed to improve traffic flow at the junction, says a story in the Eastern Daily Press.

The works include two new underpasses beneath the A47 and A11, together with a bridge over the A11. Construction is expected to continue for a further 18 months.

Residents have been documenting the effects inside their properties, with video footage showing furniture and kitchen cupboards vibrating. East Carleton and Ketteringham Parish Council and local MP Ben Goldsborough have also been approached to raise residents’ concerns with National Highways, which is overseeing the scheme.

Matt Raven, who lives close to the construction site, said he had reported vibrations to contractor Skanska on several occasions and had recorded footage of the effects.

He said the strongest vibrations made his house feel as though it was moving and that cracks had appeared in the property.

“I’ve got some videos of the kitchen cupboards vibrating,” he said.

Mr Raven described one period of particularly strong noise and vibration during excavation work, saying the activity stopped after a day or two following complaints.

“It is like a pressure wave. It is disturbing as the vibration makes you feel quite queasy,” he said.

“It’s been horrible, to be honest. We accept there will be a bit of noise, but it’s more than a bit.”

Mr Raven also said the disruption had affected his family’s day-to-day life, particularly as his wife works night shifts as a midwife. He said the only compensation the family had received from the contractors so far was a pair of earplugs for his wife.
