CitySwift, the data operating layer for major global transport networks, has announced results from its network-wide performance partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and London’s bus operators.
Customer journey times on optimised routes have been reduced by 1.5%, measured using TfL’s Journey Time Metric (JTM) – a single metric that combines both speed and reliability to accurately track customer experience improvements.
Over three years, passengers are expected to save more than 25 million hours in journey time, valued at over £230 million.
For an individual passenger, that 1.5% reduction equates to 27 seconds saved on every optimised journey – a modest gain on any single trip, but one that compounds across the millions of journeys taken on London’s buses every day.
Since deploying in 2024, the programme has become one of the largest coordinated bus performance initiatives in the world, bringing authority and operators onto a single shared data platform for the first time across London’s 650+ routes and 5 million daily customer journeys.
With CitySwift, TfL and London’s bus operators now work together to plan, simulate and prove the impact of route changes before they reach the road. As a result, more than 40% of London’s bus network has been reviewed, with 200 routes improved at no cost.
“Reaching this scale of impact with TfL and London’s operators, so early in our partnership, is an important milestone,” said Brian O’Rourke, CEO and Co-founder of CitySwift, on today’s announcement. “It shows what’s possible when an authority and its operators work from one platform to deliver better bus services for one of the world’s most complex transport networks.”
