Work is scheduled to start next week on a major scheme to improve drainage along Rhymney High Street, in Caerphilly, helping to reduce the risk of surface flooding and improve the local street scene.

Caerphilly county borough council has contracted Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Limited to undertake the project that has an estimated duration of 10 weeks.

Rhymney is currently in the top 5% of communities at risk of surface flooding in the whole of Wales. The scheme will ensure that the High Street has a modern drainage system that is better equipped to handle increasingly intense storms and unpredictable weather caused by climate change.

Cllr Jamie Pritchard, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council, said:

“Residents and businesses in Rhymney will no doubt welcome the start of these much-needed works to improve drainage and prevent flooding along the High Street in future. We recognise the disruption and damage that flooding can cause and this scheme demonstrates our commitment to delivering key strategic improvements across the whole county borough.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council and the contractor will work in partnership to keep disruption to residents and businesses to a minimum. No road closures are expected to take place, and any diversions caused by the relaying of the footway will be carefully managed. 

This project forms part of the council’s Local Flood Risk Management Strategy and is being funded by the UK Government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
