Controversial plans to introduce parking restrictions on some residential roads in Gunville on the Isle of Wight have been approved, despite more than 100 objections, says the Isle of Wight County Press.
The council’s Economy, Regeneration, Transport and Infrastructure Committee (ERTIC) voted in favour of double yellow lines on parts of Forest Hills, Arthur Moody Drive, Broadwood Lane and Park Close at its meeting at County Hall last week. The proposal is to accommodate the flow of traffic to and from a new 36-home development in the village, which was granted conditional approval in October 2022.
Out of 114 representations, 111 objected to plans for the yellow lines. At the meeting, concerns were raised by Cllr Reuben Loake over the loss of parking spaces for residents.
Cllr Paul Williams, standing in for Cllr James Whelan, said the developers should be paying for the implementation of the proposal and questioned how many incidents have happened at the junctions.
Transport Strategy Manager Stewart Chandler said it was a ‘strategic decision’ to make the changes and the council would pursue the proposal regardless of whether the development moves forward. Given the council approved the development with conditions four years ago, it could be subject to a judicial review if it was not to grant permissions associated with it.
Cllr Mark Rochell, standing in for Cllr Nick Stuart, said it should have been proposed at a planning stage and said the committee was in a position where they ‘had to say yes to it’.
Vix Lowthion, who represents the ward, said she was unconvinced of the proposal and was unsure it was ‘the only way to do it’.
