Clearview’s quick-to-install surface solar road stud gets type approval

Highways and transport solutions provider Clearview Intelligence is releasing a new version of its award-winning SolarLite road stud, after getting type approval from the Department for Transport.

Its innovative SolarLite Surface Road Studs add to the company’s already approved SolarLite Flush Stud, expanding the range of solar-powered solutions now available for deployment across UK highways.

The Surface stud has been designed with a texturised base to allow for bonding of studs directly onto the road surface, which removes the need to cut into the road surface.  It is ideal for roads where there is no need for the stud fitting to be flush to the road surface.

“The newly approved SolarLite Surface Stud builds on the success of the SolarLite Flush Stud, which has been enhancing route safety for years with active LED guidance powered entirely by renewable energy,” explained Head of Product Management, Alastair King.  “With both products now fully approved for use on public roads, Clearview offers a versatile toolkit for highway authorities to improve visibility and safety across a wide range of road types and conditions.”

The SolarLite road studs use high-visibility LED light to deliver clear guidance in all weather and lighting conditions – unlike traditional reflective studs which only shine when they are illuminated by headlights. The LED light has been proven to give drivers more time to react to road layouts, forthcoming junctions, or hazards.  The lights can be seen for up to 900m and independent research has shown they can reduce crash rates by more than 70%.

“Together, the Surface and Flush stud options allow road planners to tailor solutions to site-specific needs, whether on motorways, rural roads, or urban crossings,” Mr King added.  “They’re not just great as a road safety tool but have significant environmental benefits too, as a sustainable alternative to traditional road lighting, allowing local authorities to modernise infrastructure without adding environmental burden.”

The environmental benefits of SolarLite studs are currently being tested extensively in the East Riding of Yorkshire as part of the ADEPT Live Labs 2 project, with the solution winning a “Dragon’s Den”-style competition at the Live Labs 2 Expo in Liverpool in March.
