ITS (UK) Carbon Ambassador explains transport technology’s Net Zero role

The person overseeing the UK’s Intelligent Transport Systems industry body’s work to cut emissions has used Earth Day to explain why technology has a vital role to play in the road to Net Zero.

Keith McCabe of Simplifai Systems has written a blog post published on the ITS (UK) website to stress how ITS can be used to cut emissions, and why it’s vital the sector works together.

“The journey ahead for the transport sector is one of great change with the aim of moving from the sector that is one of the largest emitters to achieving a net zero outcome,” he writes. “To do this technology will play a key role in delivering on the commitments.  The move away from carbon-based methods of propulsion to mainly electric and zero carbon alternative fuels will require significant deployments of transport related technology.  The shift from private car-based economy to public transport and micro mobility will need a strong technological backbone to support the shift.”

The ITS (UK) Smart Environment Forum is the oldest individual interest group in the Society, set up more than 20 years ago when the link between transport’s emissions and climate change was first being recognised.

“In the lifetime of the Smart Environment Forum we have experienced the major societal shift with Environmental Issues moving from the small meeting rooms at the periphery of conference to centre stage in every significant transport event and policy announcement,” Mr McCabe continues.  “Over the last two decades the smart environment forum has built upon the experience of senior practitioners in the ITS UK to accelerate the development and deployment of ground-breaking environmental solutions.  Today the challenges are centre stage and require widespread participation to achieve the ambitious environmental goals set by society.”

In the blog post he sets out what the Smart Enviornment Forum sets out to achieve, and how it can build upon the success of COP26 in Glasgow last autumn.
