JCB has appointed George Bamford as co-chairman, with the move confirming the next stage of the family-owned manufacturer’s succession plans.

George Bamford, 45, has been promoted from deputy chairman to share the chairmanship with his father, Lord Bamford, who has led the company for more than 50 years, reports the Telegraph.

The appointment comes as JCB reports that it increased its share of global construction equipment markets in 2025, despite flat demand in North America and a contraction in India.

Lord Bamford said the leadership change formed part of the company’s next phase as it continues to invest in manufacturing capacity.

“We have never been a company that stands still, and these investments will ensure JCB is well placed to seize the opportunities ahead,” he said.

“As part of that next chapter, I’m delighted that my son George will become joint chairman of JCB.”

The company is investing heavily at its Staffordshire headquarters and is also developing a new manufacturing plant in Texas.

JCB reported sales of £5.7billion last year, broadly unchanged from the previous year, while profits fell by 7% amid lower machine sales.

Chief executive Graeme Macdonald said the company expects moderate growth this year despite continued geopolitical uncertainty, with increased manufacturing capacity supporting its plans.

JCB is also continuing its investment in zero-emission construction equipment. The company is developing hydrogen-powered excavators as part of a £100 million programme, with its machines aimed at helping reduce emissions from construction and infrastructure operations.
