National Highways awards Octavius with A46 junction upgrade

Octavius Infrastructure has been awarded the contract to design and construct the £112.5m A46 Walsgrave junction upgrade near Coventry.

The A46 is a strategic link between the East and West Midlands, connecting Coventry and Warwickshire to the motorway network.

National Highways says current levels of congestion are having a serious effect on communities and businesses and would constrain future development in the area.

Octavius Infrastructure recently delivered the adjacent Binley junction upgrade which was opened to the public in November 2022.

In June last year, National Highways announced its preferred route for Walsgrave Junction following feedback from the local community through a public consultation.

Surveys and assessments are now being carried out to develop the design of the preferred route further.

National Highways will hold another public consultation later in 2023 to share the more detailed proposals and seek local views ahead of submitting our Development Consent Order application.

National Highways Senior Project Manager, Joe Mulqueen, said: “This much-needed upgrade to Walsgrave junction will bring safer and more reliable journeys both for the local communities enduring the current congestion and delays as well as drivers using the A46 in Coventry.

“Once complete, the improvements will also provide an economic boost for communities across the region, supporting growth and development.

“Current levels of congestion at Walsgrave and the impacts this has on journey time reliability are having a serious effect on communities and businesses and would constrain future development in the area.

“This scheme is incredibly important because the A46 is a strategic link between the East and West Midlands and connects Coventry and Warwickshire to the motorway network.

“We will continue to consider the views of road users and local people as we work with Octavius Infrastructure Ltd in the design and delivery of this upgrade.”

Managing Director for Highways at Octavius Infrastructure, Gavin Pritchard, added: “We’re delighted to have been appointed as main contractor at Walsgrave junction, the next phase of the A46 Coventry junctions upgrade programme. This follows our successful delivery of the flyover scheme at Binley junction.

“We look forward to supporting National Highways to deliver this exciting project which will further benefit the local community.”
