North Kesteven Council publishes Climate Action Plan

North Kesteven District Council, which includes the towns of Sleaford and North Hykeham in Lincolnshire, has published its Climate Action Plan with a section devoted to Transport.

The Transport theme focuseds on reducing transport related emissions produced by the council and encouraging more sustainable travel options across the district as transport emissions remain a significant proportion of the district’s carbon footprint.

The council have a limited role when it comes to influencing transport within the district, as Lincolnshire County Council are the transport authority in the area, therefore the council’s responsibility predominantly focuses on encouraging the uptake of active travel options and reducing transport emissions associated with council service delivery.

This theme supports a wide range of transport interventions including public transport and active travel uptake in alignment with the Lincolnshire Local Transport Plan, as well as looking to decarbonise both council business travel and the council’s own fleet. Recent progress made by the council includes the transition to decarbonised forms of transport including Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a diesel replacement across the Waste and Street Scene Fleet. The council also continue to lobby and advocate on behalf of rural areas to support improved access to more sustainable travel opportunities.

The ambition for the Transport theme is focused on supporting sustainable transport through the increase in active travel as well as low carbon travel options such as the uptake of EVs. This includes creating a future in which:

  • The council reduces its transport-related emissions.
  • There is affordable and clean public transport which can help to reduce the reliance on cars.
  • Active travel is encouraged and accessible to all, especially for local journeys.
  • There is an increased availability of public EV ChargePoints across the district, especially to support households without off-street parking options.
  • Partnership working to support sustainable transport options is embedded.
