2026 marks an important milestone for the Road Safety Foundation (RSF) as the organisation celebrates 40 years of working towards safe mobility.
From influencing the New Drivers Act, to playing a part in the establishment of EuroNCAP to creating the methodologies and thinking that led to EuroRAP and iRAP, the RSF has been at the forefront of the efforts to reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads.
Dr Suzy Charman OBE FCIHT, Executive Director at Road Safety Foundation UK, said:
“Looking back through our archive reports (scroll down on our birthday website to find a link), it’s remarkable to see how many of today’s road safety challenges (younger drivers, older drivers, pedestrian safety, inequality and more), opportunities and debates were being explored decades ago. The archive provides a fascinating record of the Foundation’s journey, charting the evolution of road safety policy, research, engineering, risk management and the development of the Safe System approach.
“Over four decades, the Foundation has helped shape road safety thinking, championed evidence-based interventions, and played a leading role in the development of road infrastructure safety assessment through initiatives such as EuroRAP and iRAP. But perhaps most striking is the consistency of purpose that runs through those archive reports: a determination to understand risk, share knowledge and save lives.
“As we celebrate this anniversary, I’d like to thank the many trustees, staff, researchers, partners and supporters who have contributed to the Foundation’s work over the years. Your expertise, passion and commitment have helped build an organisation that continues to make a real difference.
“The past 40 years provide plenty to be proud of. The next 40 years give us an opportunity to go even further.”
