Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council has earmarked £3 million for a programme of proposed infrastructure improvements designed to make Stourbridge town centre a safe, healthier and more attractive environment.
This first phase of a proposed wider scheme, which will enhance the town’s streets, public spaces and pedestrian links, has been approved for submission to the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) which manages the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements (CRSTS).
Dudley Council has produced a business justification case, setting out a package of proposals, which was developed following consultation with residents, who strongly supported improvements to the town’s gateways, streets and spaces.
If the project is approved by the WMCA it will be delivered in phases, with the council proposing to draw down £3 million from the WMCA for the first phase.
This will focus on improving access for pedestrians and cyclists and enhancing the appearance of the northern gateway at Lower High Street and Bradley Road, as well as the southern gateway at upper High Street.
Improvements will also be made to the public realm in the High Street, Market Street and also in key public spaces such as Ryemarket Square and Foster Street, with the intention of making the town feel much more welcoming.
Improved pedestrian crossing points are also planned by Ryemarket Square and at Foster Street. Once confirmation of the funding is received, work will get underway in spring next year.
Councillor Simon Phipps, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said:
“This is a significant milestone for Stourbridge town centre as we create a safer, healthier and more attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors. The proposals have been shaped by feedback from local people and businesses, who told us they wanted improvements to the town’s gateways, streets and public spaces.
“The first phase of this investment will make it easier and safer for people to get around the town, while enhancing key areas including the High Street, Market Street, Ryemarket Square and Foster Street.
“These improvements will help create a town centre that is more welcoming, accessible and ready to support future growth and investment.”
