SWARCO awarded contract to upgrade traffic signage across Rutland

Intelligent traffic solution and technology business SWARCO UK & Ireland has signed a new agreement with Rutland County Council to install a series of Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) across the county.

Following an open and competitive tender process, Rutland County Council entered into a commercial contract with SWARCO to replace and install 68 bespoke VAS in strategic locations throughout Rutland across three phases, with phase one already completed, focusing on the busiest roads and locations within the county, such as the A47.

The signs feature a programmable speed threshold triggered by radar activation, so vehicles travelling above the threshold activate the live speed display in red, whereas complying vehicles activate the live display in green.

The signs, which are all manufactured and rigorously tested at SWARCO’s factory in Melsonby, North Yorkshire, are specifically designed to meet the specific requirements of the council and feature SWARCO’s patented lens technology system to ensure the highest optical standards are met whilst delivering lowest power consumption. A number of the new signs are fully solar powered, further enhancing energy efficiency.

The signs use a radar to detect vehicle speeds and use an energy efficient LED display to clearly show messages to oncoming drivers, as well as being equipped with highly intelligent internal data logging. The data is stored and uploaded to the SWARCO MyCity remote access platform, providing statistical feedback of vehicle speeds, road usage, and data on the number of activations, meaning the council will be able to easily monitor changing driver behaviour via MyCity.

Cllr Christine Wise, says: “Speeding is a big concern for our rural communities and something we are working hard to address through education, engineering and enforcement. The upgraded signage we have put in place with help from SWARCO provides a real deterrent to speeding and gives our residents confidence that we’re taking a proactive approach to road safety in the County.”

“We are pleased to be working with Rutland County Council on this project to upgrade traffic signage across the county,” added John Pickworth, Managing Director at SWARCO UK & Ireland. “We have worked closely together to fully understand their requirements, and have designed a high quality, reliable, durable and energy efficient solution that delivers a low lifetime cost.”
