The Tier 1 supplier Skanska has agreed to cancel a contract with National Highways to build the A46 Newark bypass in Nottinghamshire.

In a statement, the construction company said: “Skanska has received a cancellation of the contract from National Highways to deliver the upgrade of a 6.6 kilometre stretch of the A46 Newark bypass in the Midlands region, UK. The cancellation, worth £297 million, about SEK 3.7 billion, will reduce the European order bookings in the second quarter of 2026.”

The project will see the A46 widened to provide two lanes in each direction between Farndon and Winthorpe roundabouts near Newark-on-Trent. It received its Development Consent Order on 1 October 2025 and at the time National Highways said it would give a further update after the third Road Investment Strategy was published, although according to the government-owned company’s project page on its website, there have been no updates since then.

The website Construction Enquirer has added context to the latest development saying that “Skanska had been on board to build the job for nearly four years. It is understood National Highways is now going back to the drawing board for a project rethink.”

A National Highways spokesperson told Highways News: “We thank Skanska for their valuable contribution in progressing the project and continue to work with them on other schemes currently in construction.”
