A new Active Travel route that will deliver safer and more accessible walking, wheeling and cycling between Prestonpans and West Pans in East Lothian s scheduled to start construction in 2027.
The project, which was made possible through £1.5 million in funding from the Scottish Government, is being undertaken by East Lothian Council and will enhance links to local communities, services, public transport and the wider active travel network, according to Scottish Construction Now.
Improvements will also go ahead within Levenhall village to widen the pavements and create improved crossing points for pedestrians.
The project has evolved after extensive engagement with residents, businesses, community groups, and public transport operators, since its conception two years ago.
The final design was influenced by feedback gathered during consultation, with a particular focus given to maintaining bus access, minimising impacts on traffic, maintaining local views and making sure the route is suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
For the West Pans to Prestonpans Active Travel Route, the final design includes:
- Enhanced walking, wheeling and cycling facilities along the B1348 corridor from West Pans to Prestongrange Road, Prestonpans.
- A new Toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists in Prestonpans, close to the Bowling Club.
- Improved connections and infrastructure enhancements between Levenhall roundabout and Prestonpans.
- Links to National Cycle Network Route 76 and the John Muir Way, along with the proposed Musselburgh Active Toun scheme.
- Enhanced access to bus stops and community facilities.
The project, which is supported by Scottish Government Funding, is being delivered through a partnership between the council and Walk Wheel Cycle Trust, with support from lead consultants AECOM.
