Deputy Mayor to investigate A20 ‘wrong sign’ case

A temporary speed limit on a road which saw thousands of drivers being fined last year will be investigated by Sir Sadiq Khan’s transport chief.

Deputy Mayor for Transport Seb Dance has promised to look into concerns brought up by locals on a temporary 40mph speed limit applied to the A20 at the Sidcup bypass between October 2023 and October 2024.

Conservative Assembly Member Thomas Turrell claimed last month that ‘thousands of drivers’ had been fined and received penalties on their licences as a result of Transport for London (TfL) not properly implementing the temporary speed limit. Dominic Smith from Patterson Law claimed last year that his firm had received calls from hundreds of individuals enquiring about driving offences in the affected area, says Kent Live.

Mr Turrell AM said at a city hall meeting on February 27 that there were still a lot of unanswered questions around the temporary speed limit. He said that a lot of the people affected felt they had been dismissed by TfL and asked the Deputy Mayor for Transport if he would be willing to meet with him to discuss their concerns further.

Mr Dance said in response: “I am very happy to do that. We’re clearly aware of the level of interest in this and right from the very beginning we have been working to see whether the correct practices were followed.”

He added: “My understanding is that they were and I understand that there is a Crown Court case at the moment as well and plaintiffs are in that process. So there will be limits on what I can say here but I am very happy to meet with you.”
