The Department for Transport is seeking views on proposed updates to the Safety at Street Works and Road Works Code of Practice, which provides statutory guidance on the signing, lighting and guarding of works on public roads and highways.

The draft code updates the existing guidance, last revised in 2013, to reflect changes in legislation, guidance and working practices, with the aim of ensuring requirements remain clear, practical and effective for those delivering and managing street and road works.

The consultation covers issues including risk assessment, site management and traffic control, with the overarching objective of protecting workers, road users and pedestrians while minimising disruption. The code is issued jointly by the DfT, Transport Scotland, Welsh Government and Department for Infrastructure in Northern Ireland. Stakeholders are invited to review the draft code and consultation questions before submitting their feedback via the online response form.
