Roadworks on a busy Hereford route that have disrupted traffic since November are still only a quarter done and may be “reduced”, Herefordshire Council has said.

The programme of “active travel improvements” intended to make Holme Lacy Road between the A49 Ross Road and the Rotherwas industrial area more appealing to cyclists and pedestrians, has been funded by £7.9 million from the Government, says the Hereford Times.

Providing an update to colleagues on key council projects, Cabinet member for finance Pete Stoddart said the programme “is approximately 24 per cent completed”.

“There is a delay to the programme associated with minor issues, which are being actively managed and mitigated to reduce impact,” he said.

A report accompanying the meeting added: “The programme has been delayed with 45 additional days added due to a combination of changes due to design and technical specifications.

“We are looking to descope to reduce the programme where possible.”

Cllr Stoddart went on to say that construction of the £11.6 million Transport Hub taking shape in front of the city’s railway station is now “approximately 56 per cent completed”, having suffered a delay of eight weeks “due to the discovery of [uncharted] services”.

The Cabinet meeting also heard that the Full Business Case (FBC) for the first phase of the Hereford bypass to the southwest of the city is scheduled to be approved by Cabinet in September, not in July as previously indicated.

Cabinet member for transport Cllr Philip Price confirmed the council “will not enter into the construction contract until the FBC has been published and reviewed by Cabinet.”
