National Highways has expressed its concerns that the A31 wildfire in the New Forest in Hampshire could spread as the blaze enters its fourth day.

The dual carriageway remains closed in both directions between Junction 2 on the M27 and the A338 in Ringwood following a van fire which spread across the exceptionally dry heathland. Due to current wind direction there are concerns that fire could spread even further.

The area affected by the fire is now estimated to be 400 acres (1.6 sq km), the leader of Hampshire County Council says, the equivalent to the area of about 230 football pitches.

In an update with the BBC this morning, Nick Adams-King says the situation remains “unpredictable”.

“Today will be particularly challenging with temperatures around 30C and very hot, dry conditions expected to continue into tomorrow,” he says.

He also urges people to “please stay away from the Bratley View and Bolderwood area and keep all gateways, verges and tracks clear for fire engines and other emergency vehicles.”

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it expects to have a significant presence for “several days”, as it works to protect “this beautiful part of the New Forest”.

A spokesperson said:

“We are being supported by the Rapid Relief Team, who provide food and drink to help fuel our firefighters as they work in challenging conditions, to resolve this incident.

“We are incredibly grateful for the kind and generous offers from local residents to support our crews with refreshments.

“While this support is greatly appreciated, we kindly ask members of the public to avoid the area so that emergency vehicles can continue to access the scene safely.”
