Taxi drivers, local businesses and motorists in Spalding, Lincolnshire, have warned of severe traffic disruption, with some journeys taking several times longer than usual as multiple roadworks projects bring congestion across the Lincolnshire town.

Lincolnshire County Council has apologised for the disruption, which is being attributed to construction of a new cycle route, emergency repairs to a persistent sinkhole and other ongoing roadworks.

For local transport operators, the delays are creating daily challenges.

Chris Pearson, a passenger assistant for Spalding Smart Cabs, described the situation as “absolute carnage”, with drivers and motorists struggling to navigate the changing road layout.

“Everyone’s getting confused where to go,” he said.

“Two nights ago, it should take us an hour to get home, probably less, and it took us an hour and 25 minutes. It’s just a nightmare at the moment.”

One of the key sources of disruption is the construction of a new cycle path along Pinchbeck Road, where a temporary one-way system has been introduced to allow the works to proceed safely.

The project is officially scheduled for completion on 30 October.

Meanwhile, repair work on a persistent sinkhole in Enterprise Way began in June, creating further disruption for motorists and local businesses.

Ashley Behan, traffic manager at Lincolnshire County Council, apologised for the frustrating delays but said he hoped the disruption would ultimately deliver longer-term benefits.

He described the situation as a case of “short-term pain for long-term gain”.
