Local university and college students discover benefits of a career improving the road network

Team members from road safety and line marking specialist, WJ Group, have visited Keele University and The Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) Newcastle campus to highlight the benefits of a career within the highways industry.

During the 2-day visit, employee from WJ Group spoke to students about what they do, their experiences working on UK roads and how they support their successful maintenance and improvement. This included how they use new technological innovations to map the road network and resolve issues such as potholes, faded markings and low friction levels.

Working alongside local authorities and National Highways, Newcastle-under-Lyme based WJ Group works to maintain and improve the road network using the latest solutions, supported by its engineering, products and operational teams. This includes highly durable road markings, intelligent traffic solutions, life-extending and friction improving surface treatments amongst various other services.

To inspire the next generation of highways professionals, WJ Group has been visiting schools, colleges and universities across the country to showcase the benefits of working on some of the nation’s most critical stretches of road infrastructure. This will allow them to make informed decisions about their future career choice.

Rob Elsby, Marketing Manager at WJ Group said: “Many of these students will soon be making that difficult decision about what career they want to enter. By taking the time to visit schools and universities, we can educate students about the role a business like ours plays as well as showing them a different career pathway that they might not have considered. Alongside this, they can discover the behind-the-scenes work carried out by their council and the government to ensure their roads can be used and which businesses that make it possible.”

Professionals from WJ Group have now visited many schools across the country to inform pupils about the career choice. In the coming years, it aims to continue expanding their outreach efforts.

Rob continued: “Many students will be looking for a career choice that allows them to work in the great outdoors ensuring that critical infrastructure, such as our nation’s roads, are ready for drivers, connecting communities and strengthening the economy. We hope that in the coming years, we’ll be seeing some familiar faces driving our vehicles, manufacturing our equipment and working in the office supporting this vital work.”
