As part of a junction improvement programme at the intersection of the A41, Hendon Way and The Vale in the London Borough of Barnet, Yunex Traffic supplied, installed and commissioned a 56-aspect traffic signal and control solution for Transport for London. The new intersection features Yunex Traffic’s Plus+ solution and was delivered using the company’s innovative Advantage system which allows complex signalised traffic intersection schemes to be delivered without the need for a separate, costly temporary traffic management solution.
Yunex Traffic said that as part of the Transport for London Road Network, the scheme saw the installation of 16 signal- and four pedestrian-heads, using Yunex Traffic’s ST950 Plus+ Advantage and Actis signal heads. The work was completed three weeks ahead of schedule, with the transition from temporary to permanent signal control taking just six nights, following completion of the civil works.
Unlike traditional schemes, Plus+ Advantage uses the permanent signal equipment as temporary equipment during the scheme deployment phase. For this project, the Plus+ controller was installed in its permanent location from the outset, with the signal equipment mounted on temporary poles and bases. As the civils works were completed and new poles installed, the Plus+ signal equipment in the temporary locations was simply transferred to the new permanent locations. This approach significantly reduced programme complexity, cost, time and carbon emissions, while significantly minimising disruption for road users said Yunex Traffic.
Yunex Traffic highlight that crucially, because the ST950 Plus+ controller is registered to TOPAS 2500B standard, a full UTC commissioning could also take place with the temporary site, allowing full UTC connectivity to be maintained throughout the works. So, even in the construction stage, the traffic signals ran under UTC and SCOOT control, with full integration of pedestrian and cycle movements. The result was uninterrupted coordination and smoother traffic flow from initial construction through to permanent deployment, resulting in reduced disruption, congestion, and road user frustration.
Wilke Reints, Managing Director Yunex Traffic UK, said:
“Our Plus+ Advantage solution is now delivering performance, sustainability and cost benefits in projects across the UK, with tangible reductions in disruption for road users. We were delighted to work with TfL on the first Plus+ Advantage installation in London; together we’ve delivered another high-quality installation, which will support improved network performance.
The installation of a signalised traffic intersection typically demands significant civil engineering works, which in turn require lane closures and the installation of temporary signals. Our solution provides a new and unique approach, enabling even the most complex schemes to be delivered without the need for temporary traffic signals.”
Yunex Traffic detailed that by proving that major signal upgrades can be delivered faster, cleaner and with minimal disruption, this first London installation sets out a new benchmark for how complex junction improvements can be achieved across the capital and beyond.
