Carmaker Toyota and driverless vehicle innovator Waymo have announced plans to begin testing an autonomous Toyota bZ4X fleet in Japan in 2027, with deployment in the UK planned for subsequent years.
The companies say the next phase of their collaboration will combine Toyota’s vehicle manufacturing expertise with Waymo’s autonomous driving technology to support the expansion of driverless ride-hailing services.
Toyota will manufacture the vehicles at its Takaoka plant in Japan, where Waymo’s autonomous driving hardware will also be integrated.
The announcement builds on a preliminary agreement reached in April 2025. No firm date has been given for deployment of the Toyota vehicles in the UK.
Toyota Executive Vice President Hiroki Nakajima said: “Safety technology makes the biggest difference when it reaches as many people as possible.”
Mr Nakajima said the collaboration would help bring the technology to more customers through Waymo’s services.
The adapted electric SUVs will feature automatic doors, a powered tailgate and additional rear passenger space.
The companies will also investigate further safety initiatives. They will continue exploring the potential application of autonomous driving technology to privately owned Toyota vehicles, although no production timetable has been announced.
