The highways and transport solutions provider Clearview Intelligence has installed a new LIDAR-based active travel safety solution in a new project to improve safety and accessibility along a three-quarter mile (1.2km) stretch of National Cycle Network Route 1 at Carnoustie in the Scottish county of Angus.
Partnering with Angus Council staff, Clearview developed a Pedestrian and Cyclist Priority Scheme for this newly upgraded, off-road route which has been a key pinch point where vehicles and active travellers share the same road space crossing a narrow bridge which couldn’t be widened as part of the route design due to existing utility services and the adjacent railway line boundary.
Using the Clearview Connex Active Pedestrian and Cycle Classifier, the solution involves setting all signals to red by default, with a detection system for approaching vehicles to turn their signals green, allowing them to pass, before the signal goes red again. The pedestrian and cyclist detection using LIDAR technology detects pedestrians and cyclists 25 metres from the crossing, switching their signals to green and allowing safe passage before signals return to red, ready for the next sequence.
The system prioritises pedestrians and cyclists, making active travel safer and more efficient.
The scheme is part of upgrades to National Cycle Network Route 1 in Carnoustie and Monifieth which have created more segregated spaces which are protected from traffic, making walking, wheeling and cycling in Angus easier and safer than ever.
Clearview’s Connex Active solution classifies pedestrians and bicycles for active travel detection and analysis. It utilises LIDAR to provide a non-invasive active travel detection and classification solution enabling the creation of virtual lanes based on the distance of the object detected – used to understand if potential conflicts are occurring on segregated pedestrian and cycle paths.
An optional 4G or ethernet communications module provides the ability to deliver real-time or scheduled data to Clearview’s Insight® Data Management platform or to any other system using open standards data formats and protocols.
