Delay to £600,000 safety improvements unacceptable, says Oxfordshire councillor

Oxfordshire County Council has become embroiled in an ongoing row over a £600,000 safety improvement on a road in Witney. Councillor Thomas Ashby has said pedestrian crossings over Deer Park Road are an “absolute priority” and has criticised the county council for delays to the scheme, said the Oxford Mail.

Developer contributions totalling £600,000 have been secured for the the proposed safety measures and others but as of yet no work has taken place. Cllr Ashby has said this is unacceptable considering the increased traffic in the area.

He said:

“The ongoing development in West Witney has increased traffic volumes to a level where many families feel it is unsafe for children to walk or cycle to school. We need these crossings in place as soon as possible, to ensure the safety of ever increasing young people travelling to school and connecting with the rest of Witney.”

In response the county council has said it is currently seeking a contractor for the works, after which a delivery schedule will be confirmed.

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson responded:

“Developer contributions have been secured for improvements in the area, including signalised crossings for pedestrians and cyclists on Deer Park Road. Initial design work for the crossings has been completed, and the council is now seeking to appoint a contractor for detailed design and construction.

“A revised programme for delivery will be confirmed following the appointment of the contractor. A consultation allowing the public to comment on the proposals will be undertaken during the next design phase.”
