Moray Council is introducing new 20mph speed limits on roads in towns and villages across the area. It’s part of a national plan from the Scottish Government to make roads safer by the end of 2025.
Following a review of all roads in Moray, around 420km of roads will change from 30mph to 20mph, where it’s considered safer and more suitable. This includes areas near schools, homes, shops and healthcare facilities.
The new limits will be introduced using road signs only, through a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) lasting up to 18 months. This allows the council to monitor how well the changes are working before moving to permanent limits where appropriate.
Funded by Transport Scotland, most of the signs will be placed on existing lampposts, with between 4,000 and 5,000 signs expected to be installed across Moray starting in autumn 2025.
Chair of Moray Council Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, Cllr Marc Macrae, said:
We all want our streets to feel safer, especially for children walking to school or people getting out and about in their communities. Slowing down to 20mph in the right places can make a real difference, and we hope this change will encourage more people to walk or cycle with confidence.”
