National Highways has confirmed that a contraflow system on the M48 Severn Bridge will be installed on Saturday 1 August, with the aim of it being removed and the road fully reopened from 6am on 27 September.

The South Wales Argus reports that the two‑month traffic restrictions are part of a resurfacing trial on the ageing bridge ahead of a full upgrade planned for 2027 and 2028. The trial resurfacing scheme will begin in August, bringing narrow lanes, 30mph speed limits, and overnight closures.

A final weekend shutdown will take place in September before the bridge reopens.

National Highways will install the contraflow system beginning on 1 August, with a westbound carriageway closure and eastbound lane restrictions. A full closure will follow from 8pm on 7 August to 8pm on 8 August to complete the contraflow setup.

The contraflow will then remain in place until 18 September, with a single narrow 3m lane running in each direction on the eastbound carriageway and a 30mph speed limit enforced by average speed cameras.

The westbound carriageway will be closed throughout the resurfacing works.

The westbound footpath will also be closed during this period, though the eastbound footpath will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.

Signage will be in place to guide all non‑motor road users.

To remove the contraflow, a final full closure of both carriageways is scheduled from 8pm on 18 September to 8pm on 19 September. This will be followed by additional lane closures and speed restrictions until September 26, as crews remove equipment and perform final checks.
