National Highways provides ‘update’ on M6/M61 pinchpoint

National Highways have issued an update on its intentions to tackle the M6/M61 pinchpoint near Preston.

The point where the M61 northbound meets the M6 northbound is regularly heavily congested at peak times. Around three years ago National Highways, which is responsible for the maintenance and management of the motorways, revealed that transport bosses were looking at “the possibility” of making changes to the junction in the next Road Investment Strategy, says Lancashire Live.

A spokesman for National Highways said in September 2022: “We are aware how congested this merge is and will continue to monitor with the possibility of something being delivered in the next Road Investment Strategy period from 2025.”

However, in an update sent to LancsLive this week, a spokesman confirmed: “While there are currently no plans for a scheme, we are constantly monitoring the performance of our network to identify any improvements that may be required.”
