East Sussex Highways has reported that 17 traffic signal sites across the county, mainly in the Eastbourne area, have recently been deliberately damaged.

“This vandalism is dangerous and puts the safety of everyone using our roads at risk,” the company wrote on LinkedIn.

“Traffic signals play a vital role in helping vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists move safely through junctions and crossings. When equipment is damaged, signals may not operate as intended, creating potential safety concerns, congestion, and disruption for road users.

“Our teams work as quickly as possible to repair the affected sites and restore normal operation, but the scale of the damage means some repairs take longer than others, or we need to wait for replacement parts.

“We have reported the incidents to Sussex Police, and would encourage anyone who witnesses damage to traffic signals or sees suspicious activity around signal-controlled junctions and crossings to also report it.”

East Sussex Highways is a partnership between Balfour Beatty Living Places and East Sussex County Council.
