Clearview delivers bespoke solution to monitor bridge use

Highways and transport solutions provider Clearview Intelligence has built its client Worcestershire County Council a bespoke 5G CCTV solution to monitor how many pedestrians and cyclists use a bridge in the county.

The bridge over the River Severn in Worcester, linking Gheluvelt Park to the Kepax site, could not be monitored using traditional fibre solutions because the cost was prohibitive. Legacy equipment used on other bridges in Worcestershire had proved to be inaccurate, because it struggled to detect bicycles made from non-ferrous materials, and lacked the flexibility to count other modes such as e-scooters.

Therefore, the company has installed CCTV and a Clearview Intelligence Connex Vision AI Sensor, connected via public 5G, collecting real-time data on bridge users. This is transmitted to a secure cloud-based data platform and, to protect privacy, faces and other personal data is blurred in real time.

The 5G supported CCTV camera links with the wider CCTV network in the City, and insights are being gained into how the bridge is being used – whether for commuting or leisure, how usage patterns are influenced by weather, public holidays, and the ratio of cyclists to pedestrians.

These insights are being used by the council to guide improvements to both local and county-wide infrastructure based on real-world usage trends. So far more than 116,000 pedestrians have been counted using the bridge, alongside nearly 21,000 cyclists.
