New average speed safety cameras will be switched on today along the A5012 Via Gellia on Monday, September 28 – as part of ongoing work from Derbyshire County Council (DCC) to make the route safer.

The three new cameras are located north of Cromford, next to Old Mill Cottage and next to Colourworks Cottage, says the Derbyshire Times.

The speed limits along the route are not changing, however. A 40mph limit remains in place from Cromford to west of Old Mill Cottage, while a 50mph limit applies between Colourworks Cottage and Grangemill.

DCC have worked closely with Derbyshire Police to introduce the cameras, and the force supports their shared aim of making the Via Gellia safer for everyone who uses it.

DCC’s cabinet member for highways, Councillor Charlotte Hill, said:

“We want everyone using this scenic road to get to their destination safely, and these cameras are an important part of our work to reduce collisions along the route. The speed limits are not changing, but we are asking drivers to take care, follow the signs and keep within the limit throughout their journey.

“We know average speed cameras can encourage safer and more consistent driving, and we hope these final cameras will help prevent more people being seriously injured.”

The cameras are part of a £2.2 million package of safety improvements funded by the Government through the Safer Roads Fund. The work aims to reduce collisions and casualties along the nine-mile stretch of the A5012.
