The Czech city of Brno is taking the next step in its mobility journey with a new Traffic Information Center designed to create a single source of truth for traffic operations across the city. Bringing together traffic, parking, public transport and roadway information, the platform will support more informed decision-making and provide AI-enabled traffic predictions.

As part of the project, Yunex Traffic and Aimsun will collaborate on an expert module combining traffic modeling, historical and real-time data analysis, short-term traffic forecasting and decision support for signal-controlled intersections. The module will be integrated with Brno’s existing Yutraffic Symphony traffic management system.

Brno’s Traffic Information Center has been serving the city since 2016, collecting and publishing information on road closures, incidents, parking availability, traffic signal status and live traffic conditions. The next generation of the Traffic Information Center expands this capability by bringing together data from the city road network, highways, public transport operators and maintenance authorities into a single mobility ecosystem.

The new platform is designed to integrate data from variable message signs, video detection systems, parking services, weather stations, winter maintenance systems, bollards and C-ITS technologies. By bringing these data sources together, city operators can gain a more complete view of network conditions, enabling faster decision-making and more proactive traffic management.

As part of the project, Yunex Traffic and Aimsun will collaborate on an expert module for the Traffic Information Center. The module will combine traffic modeling, short-term traffic forecasting and decision support, and will be integrated with Brno’s existing Yutraffic Symphony traffic management system. This extends the traffic management capabilities already in use in Brno and supports the city’s evolution toward centrally managed traffic.

The expert module will use Aimsun Next for the digital model of Brno’s transportation network and Aimsun Live, Aimsun’s digital twin solution, for real-time traffic evaluation and short-term forecasting. By maintaining a live digital twin of Brno’s road network, the platform can continuously reflect actual traffic conditions rather than relying on static models. Historical and real-time data from traffic detectors will support model calibration, network assessment and rolling forecasts of up to 60 minutes, helping operators anticipate congestion and evaluate suitable response strategies before implementation.

The real-time system will continuously compare current traffic conditions with expected patterns based on historical data. When it detects a significant deviation, including an unexpected drop in traffic flow, it can flag a potential incident. The planned scope includes ten congestion hotspots where traffic management measures can be applied, with the operational areas typically covering six to eight signal-controlled intersections.

Once an incident has been identified and verified by an operator, the solution can simulate up to three predefined response plans and compare them with a “do nothing” scenario using agreed key performance indicators. Forecasting results and proposed strategies will be available through Yunex Traffic’s traffic management platform, Yutraffic Symphony. Operators can review and implement the selected response, while the final operational design may also support a higher level of automation.

“The goal is to help operators make more informed decisions before congestion impacts the network,” said James Daniels, Europe Managing Director at Aimsun. “By combining traffic simulation with AI-enabled predictive capabilities, operators can better understand future traffic conditions and evaluate potential responses before implementing them.”

In addition to real-time operations, an offline traffic modeling component based on Aimsun Next will allow traffic scenarios to be created, tested and compared before their potential implementation. It can be used for signal optimization and to assess planned and unplanned road closures, diversion routes, incidents, exceptional traffic demand and changes to traffic signal plans.
